Rare plant species

More than 1,400 species of vascular plants have been recorded in the flora of the Republic of Mordovia, including 6 placentae, 8 horsetails, 18 fern-shaped species, 3 gymnosperms, and the remaining 1 365 species - flowering or angiospermous plants. In the Red Book of the Republic of Mordovia, 170 vascular species are represented, including 2 species of the plains, 1 - horsetail, 4 - fern-shaped, 1 - gymnosperms, 162 - angiosperms, or flowering plants. A special place among them is occupied by 13 species included in the Red Book of the Russian Federation. They can be considered on the territory of the Republic of Mordovia as objects of state protection.

Many plants have borders of their ranges on the territory of Mordovia, boreal species - southern borders, oak forests - eastern, steppe - northern. Almost half are species of the most vulnerable steppe communities in Mordovia, which are widespread in the black and carbonate slopes that have escaped from plowing, mainly in the east of the republic. Protection of steppe plants is especially topical. Steppe flora and vegetation today are formally protected only on the territory of three natural monuments. Species of plants of upper and transitional bogs need special protection and observation. Their populations were badly affected during the active development of peatlands in the 30-50s of the 20th century.
