The main waterway is the Alatyr River, which in the district receives the waters of Insara. The area of ​​the catchment to the point under consideration is 4,715 km2. The annual flow rate is 17.4 m3 / s, its volume is 549 million m3 per year. In the average water year, 81.6% of its annual volume passes in spring, 5.2% in winter, 13.2% in summer and fall.

Chernozems (45%), gray forest (24%) and floodplain (15%) soils occupy a significant proportion in the structure of the soil cover. In the southern part of the region broad-leaved forests predominate with meadow and shrubby steppes, and on the left bank of Alatyr there are pine and coniferous-deciduous forests. Under forests, 25.0% are occupied, and under bushes - 1.7% of the area.

The economy of the Ichalkovsky district has an agrarian and industrial orientation. The leading place is occupied by plant growing and cattle breeding (meat and milk cattle breeding). The district is one of the leading producers of grain in Mordovia, it belongs to the zone of intensive cultivation of sugar beet. The most vigorous spring crops in the region are barley and oats. The processing industry is actively developing. Here there is a distillery, a meat processing plant Obrochensky, a cheese factory, a furniture factory.
